Philippine Island Times Adventures of an American expat in the Philippines

Typhoons and terrorism are on my list of things to avoid in the Philippines, and Manila is one of the few places that has both. Doubt I’d want to live there (mostly just because I don’t like big cities; the chances of getting blown away or blown up are really quite slim), but passing through is the easiest way to get to where I want to be, and it’s lot of fun. I like to stay in the Ermita/Malate area for the restaurants and bars and the walk along Manila Bay.

My favorite place is the Cherry Blossoms Hotel (phone 524 7631; about $35/night for a single).

Cherry Blossoms Hotel

It’s not as nice and shiny as a Best Western but it’s perfectly decent and has some charming details and tons more character. It’s close to everything I like about Ermita and right next to the Robinson’s Mall. About a 20 minute drive from the airports at night. (During the day everything depends on the traffic. I allow an hour to get back to the airports when I leave in the morning.)
